PRACTICAL GUIDE · BATTERIES AND COLD

Battery with or without self-heating: is it really necessary?

In Quebec, cold weather is an important factor for lithium batteries.

Self-heating is often presented as essential, but its usefulness mainly depends on where the battery is installed and when it is used.

01

Why cold temperatures are a concern

Cold temperatures do not affect discharging and charging in the same way.

  • Available capacity and power decrease as temperature drops.
  • Many LFP batteries should not be charged below 0°C unless the manufacturer explicitly allows it.
  • The battery management system may block charging to protect the cells.
  • Improper cold-weather charging can accelerate ageing or damage the battery.
Always check the data sheet

Charging, discharging and protection thresholds vary by cell chemistry, BMS and model.

02

What does self-heating do?

CHARGING

Warm the battery before charging

Heating helps the cells reach a temperature that permits charging.

PROTECTION

Protect the battery

It reduces the risk of damaging the battery when charging after exposure to freezing temperatures.

WINTER

Improve availability

It helps a system continue accepting a charge during winter operation.

Exact operation varies: some models use incoming charging power, while others may use some stored energy.

03

When is it genuinely useful?

SituationSelf-heating recommended?
Unheated cabin in winterYes
RV or camper van used in winterYes
Battery installed in an unheated spaceYes, if cold-weather charging is possible
Heated home, indoor batteryOften unnecessary
Three-season use onlyGenerally not a priority
04

The limits of self-heating

  • Heating uses energy and can delay the start of charging.
  • It does not eliminate all performance loss in severe cold.
  • It does not replace a protected, ventilated installation that follows manufacturer instructions.
  • It adds cost and sometimes complexity that may not be useful in a consistently heated space.

PRACTICAL GUIDELINE

Useful when cold exposure is genuinely part of the use case.

Self-heating is not always mandatory. It becomes strongly recommended when an LFP battery may remain below freezing and still needs to recharge regularly.

The final choice must always respect the manufacturer’s published temperature range.
