PRACTICAL GUIDE · AUTONOMY

Partial autonomy vs. complete autonomy

The word “autonomy” does not always mean the same thing.

There is a major difference between partial autonomy and complete autonomy, also called off-grid.

Understanding this distinction helps prevent oversizing and overpaying for a system.

01–02

Two very different levels of autonomy

GRID-CONNECTED

Partial autonomy

You remain connected to the electrical grid. Solar panels generate electricity; some is used immediately and the surplus can be stored or exported to the grid.

Goal

Reduce the bill and provide a certain level of backup.

Advantages

  • More reasonable cost
  • Fewer batteries required
  • Simpler system
  • The grid remains a safety net

Limitations

  • You still depend on the grid
  • During a long outage, autonomy remains limited

OFF-GRID

Complete autonomy

You are no longer connected to the grid. All electricity must be generated and stored on site.

Goal

Operate without depending on Hydro-Québec.

Advantages

  • Complete independence
  • Ideal for remote sites

Disadvantages

  • Much higher cost
  • Very precise sizing is required
  • A backup generator is often required
  • More complex management, especially in winter

DECISION GUIDELINE

Complete autonomy is not a default objective.

For most residential situations in Quebec, partial autonomy offers the best balance of cost, simplicity and results.

Complete autonomy is most justified when the grid is unavailable or prohibitively expensive to extend.

CLARIFY THE NEED

Unsure which level of autonomy to target?

Describe your situation to clarify the level of autonomy actually required.
